Plans for a hair and beauty salon at a social club in South Tyneside have been given the green light.
Earlier in April, plans were filed with the South Tyneside Council for Jordan’s Social Club off Marine Drive in the Hebburn area.
This included partially changing the use of an existing storage room to a living room and exterior work such as installing a new window and a new front door with a ramp.
The request was from The Hospitality Co. NE Ltd and after reviewing the submissions, South Tyneside Council planners approved the program on June 1, 2021.
A council decision report said the proposed lounge would provide a service to the local community and have no impact on neighbors.
The report reads: “The proposed use would provide local service to serve a small catchment area in the immediate vicinity of a local neighborhood shopping center; and complement existing uses.
“Taking into account the existing commercial recreational use of the building, as well as the small size and proposed use of the unit; it is considered that the proposal would represent an appropriate form of sustainable development in this location.
“[It would] provide additional service to the local community and would not undermine the vitality and viability of one of the Borough’s major shopping centers in South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn.
The planners added that the development was based on a sustainable location and was close to homes, public transport and public parking lots.
The report goes on to say, “Taking this into account, as well as the small size of the new unit and the likely number of displacements that would be generated by the development, it is judged that [the application] would be acceptable in terms of the capacity and safety of the highways.
According to its website, Jordan’s Social Club is a family-friendly venue featuring games such as snooker, billiards, and darts, two banquet halls for rent, and events such as bands, line dancing, and karaoke.
Under municipal town planning conditions, the work of the proposed hairdressing and aesthetic salon must be brought forward within three years.
